What is AI visibility?
More homeowners now ask ChatGPT, Claude or Perplexity who to call instead of scrolling Google. Here's what "AI visibility" means, what GEO and AEO are, and what decides which companies get named.
AI visibility is how often AI assistants name your business when someone asks them for a recommendation.
Ask an assistant "Who should I call for furnace repair in Knoxville?" and it names three or four companies. Your AI visibility is how often you are one of them. Unlike Google, there's no page two: you're either in the answer or you're not.
Here are a few well-reviewed local companies that offer emergency furnace repair:
1. A competitor · 2. Another competitor · 3. A third competitor

GEO, AEO, AI SEO: what the terms mean
| Term | What it means |
|---|---|
| GEO Generative Engine Optimization | Improving how often a business appears in answers from AI tools. The most common industry term. |
| AEO Answer Engine Optimization | The same idea, framed around "answer engines" instead of search results. |
| AI SEO / LLMO | Other names for the same practice ("LLM" stands for the large language models behind tools like ChatGPT). |
| AI visibility | The measurement: how often you're recommended. GEO and AEO are what you do to improve it. |
How AI visibility is measured
AI answers change from one question to the next, so a single check means very little. A fair measurement:
- Asks the questions your customers actually ask ("emergency plumber open on weekends", "who installs heat pumps near me").
- Asks each one several times, on several assistants with live web search: ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity.
- Reports a rate, for example "recommended in 4 of 72 answers", next to the local competitors who are being recommended instead.
What decides who gets recommended
When a homeowner asks, the assistant searches the web and summarizes what trusted sources say. Businesses that show up often, consistently and positively get named. In our scans of HVAC companies, the sources assistants cited most were directory profiles like BBB, Birdeye, HomeAdvisor and Angi, along with company websites. The main levers:
- Consistent listings: the same name, address and phone on Google, Bing, Apple, BBB, Yelp, Angi and other directories.
- A complete Google Business Profile: the right categories, services, service areas, photos and Q&A.
- Fresh reviews that name the work: "furnace repair", "same-day", "heat pump install". Recent reviews matter more than old ones.
- Service pages that answer the question: clear pages for each service in each town you cover.
- Bing, not just Google: ChatGPT's search leans on Bing, which many contractors have never claimed.
Is it the same as SEO?
It overlaps with local SEO, but it isn't the same. Google ranks pages in a list. An AI assistant reads many sources and names only a few businesses. A company can rank well on Google and still be left out of AI answers. We've measured companies with thousands of reviews that were named in fewer than 1 in 10 answers.
Can anyone guarantee an AI will recommend you?
No, and be careful with anyone who says they can. The AI companies control their answers, and the answers vary. What can be done honestly is to measure your rate, fix the sources the assistants rely on, and track whether the number moves. Never buy reviews or only ask happy customers for them: that breaks Google's rules and can get a profile suspended.
